A Hangi is a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven.

The Haka  is a traditional war cry, dance, or challenge from the Māori people and it’s performed with dramatic movements, gestures, stamping of the feet and shouts that are pretty intimidating.  If you don’t believe me, just look at this video of the USA vs. New Zealand basketball game:

Oh I love the confused faces of the American team.

AP and I were invited to a Hangi this past weekend and we spent the afternoon amongst New Zealand friends, sharing picnics in the cold rain and after it passed, we shared a bit of Maori culture and hospitality!

  1. This is fabulous, Kim! Golly, I wish I had been there. I don’t think I would have even minded the rain.

  2. I’ve been sick for the last couple of days. Haka is the sound I’ve been making all night to get those phlegm balls out.

  3. Kate says to watch the movie “Whale Rider” to find out more about the Maori. Good movie with a beautiful soundtrack.
