The Bahthday

Somebody turned four years old yesterday…

A few days before her party, while she was staying with me, she told me that she needed to tell me something. And then, “I just want to say that when you come to my party I might not be able to play with you because I’ll have other friends there.”

I thanked her for her consideration and told her that it was perfectly fine for her to play with her school friends.

AP and I were the only couple there without young children. We chatted a bit to some parents who expressed concern over parenting during the upcoming teenage years. AP and I assured them that it was nothing to fear and that everything will be fine. However, we did not look them in the eye when we said this and I bit my bottom lip and shuffled my feet a little while AP quickly changed the subject.

Then one of the children brought out a bicycle horn and a toy drum.

The end.

We went home and had a nice cup of tea and a sit-down.

Happy fourth birthday, little one. You’re a star.

  1. Your small friend makes me smile. They’re wonderful when you can have a conversation with them…it seems such a short time before they become uncommunicative teens….
    I know. I was one!

  2. Nothing to fear, all will be fine? Are you mad? All I have to do is think back to my teen years and I get a chill. How did I live through those years. Thank god all I have are dogs. They live until their early teen years and then leave without a bill for college tuition owed.

  3. I am chuckling over tess’s comment because, at first, I thought the post was about bath-day … then I saw the additional ‘h’! Boy, these little ones can wrap around your heart, can’t they?
