AP just returned from a trip to France. He went with his friends to tour the battlefields and war memorials of Normandy.
The group was lucky enough to find a local Frenchman who could give them a personal tour, complete with gruesome war stories and personal anecdotes to fill out the picture for them.
When they came to the memorial pictured above, the French guide said, “And this…this looks like the sex…” to which the British quipped, “Oh then it must have been designed by a Frenchman!”
“No, no,” said the guide, “It is like the middle finger!” And the Brits said, “Ah and it’s pointed at England!”
“Yes! Yes! Pointed at England!” said the guide and much hilarity ensued.
The Anglo-French relationship is a complicated one indeed.
